The Inter-University PhD in "Advanced and Sustainable Agricultural-Forestry Systems" (SAFAS) aims to train PhDs whose scientific and technical profile is attractive for academic institutions and research structures, both national and foreign, as well as for companies public and private.
The attractiveness of the competent figure trained will be ensured by his highly innovative and leading knowledge in the field of new technologies, from digital technologies, to IoT (Internet of Things), to artificial intelligence, to sensors, to robotics, to use of drones, etc.
A set of innovative solutions with exceptional potential which, if properly implemented, could allow Tuscan agri-food excellence, and more generally the entire Tuscan agricultural-forestry system, that upgrade necessary to remain competitive on a now global market.
Educational success will be guaranteed by the excellence and consolidated experience of the staff responsible for the scientific-didactic training of PhD students, from the Board of Teachers, Italian and foreign, to the prestigious research institutions external to the ATS that participate in this PhD project, the whose expertise will be combined with that of the business world, operating in close relationship with the territory.
The final objective is to train and encourage the competitive inclusion of PhDs in the field of research and the entrepreneurial system, where they will be able to bring the innovation and competitiveness necessary to strengthen the economic and environmental sustainability of agricultural, forestry and agri-food systems. and Tuscan agro-industrial industries which also generate work, generational turnover, territorial protection and social cohesion.
You must have a master's degree or equivalent (at least 5 years of university studies). You can apply before graduation but must earn your degree by October 30th. You must be under 35 years of age when submitting your application. You must also be able to use English in a professional context (CEFR level B2 required).
Some scholarships financed by the University of Florence, by the Tuscany Region under the Pegaso program and occasionally by private companies are available.

The standard duration of the program is 3 years and can be extended in special circumstances. Within the three-year period, Pegaso scholarship holders must spend six months of study and research at a foreign institution.
The evaluation will be carried out by a commission of experts who will evaluate your past academic results, as well as on the basis of your knowledge of the disciplines directly relevant to the program, your aptitude for research and your investigative skills and competences.
The selection process involves the presentation of a research project and a formal interview in front of the commission. If you are based abroad, we can organize telephone interviews/video conferences.
